Dan Hughes
Fourth Grade Head Teacher
Dan Hughes graduated from Hamilton College in 2012 with a B.A. in economics. After a short stint as a financial advisor, he reconnected with his passion for coaching and teaching at Avenues: The World School, in New York City. There, he coached both soccer and basketball and taught first grade for four years. When Avenues announced its second campus in São Paulo, Brazil, Dan jumped at the opportunity and moved south. In São Paulo, Dan taught third, fourth, and fifth grade while also coaching the girls varsity basketball team. When he is not teaching, Dan loves playing soccer, biking, hiking, gardening, and eating good food. At BPC, Dan has taught both third and fourth grade and loves spending time with students in the garden and on field trips to Tilden Park. Last year, Dan and his wife welcomed their daughter Naomi into the world and have relished every moment with her. Dan, Julia, and Naomi also love spending time with their two cats, Zozo and Paçoca.
Why I Work with Children
I think there is so much joy in learning and discovering new things. I love being around kids because it is important to remind ourselves that play and discovery are important parts of our lives as adults as well.
A Favorite Book
Lab Girl by Hope Jahren. This book is a poetic reminder about how much we can learn from the natural world.
