Making Solar Ovens (5th)

As part of our science unit on thermal energy, 5th grade students explore the principles of heat transfer, thermal conductors and insulators through a hands-on solar ovens project. Adapted from the Engineering is Elementary curriculum developed by the Science Museum of Boston, this unit challenges students to design and build their own solar ovens. They investigate how each structural element supports the oven’s function, then test various insulating materials—evaluating both their ability to retain heat and their environmental impact. The project concludes with a fun and rewarding celebration as students cook and enjoy a treat using the power of the sun.
