Dissecting Owl Pellets (3rd)

As part of their study of ecosystems, 3rd grade students step into the role of ecologists during an exciting owl pellet dissection. They examine real (heat-treated and sanitized) owl pellets to analyze the diet of barn owls by identifying the bones of small animals hidden inside. Students learn that after a barn owl swallows its prey whole, its gizzard separates out indigestible parts—like bones and fur—which are later regurgitated as a compact pellet. Through this hands-on investigation, students deepen their understanding of food chains, predator-prey relationships, and the role of owls in their ecosystem.
