Fifth Grade Head Teacher
Maureen Ray is the fifth grade head teacher. An East Bay native, Ms. Ray received her B.A. from UC San Diego and her multiple subject teaching credential and master’s degree from UCLA’s Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. Prior to her arrival at BPC, she taught in Los Angeles and Hayward public schools. Ms. Ray enjoys traveling for professional development. Highlights include studying the Civil War in Gettysburg, Abraham Lincoln in Oxford, George Washington at Mount Vernon, Thomas Jefferson in Edinburgh, Slavery in the Colonial North in New York city, and most recently American Immigration in Los Angeles with Prof. Jane Hong and the Civil Rights Movement in Memphis with Prof. Charles McKinney. When not at school or traveling, Ms. Ray spends most of her personal time at the Contra Costa Civic Theatre in El Cerrito, where she directs the Live at CCCT summer drama camp and serves on both the artistic advisory committee and the theatre’s board of directors. Occasionally, she even makes her way back onto the stage herself! Ms. Ray joined Black Pine Circle School in 2009.
Why I Work with Children
Working with children is the best! I love their optimism, their sense of wonder, and their capacity for fun.
A Favorite Book
I always enjoy returning to Bunnicula. I love the way the comedy/mystery explores themes of family, diversity, and acceptance.
