DeAndre Calhoun
Head of Upper School, Assistant Head of School
DeAndre Calhoun has been Black Pine Circle School’s head of upper school since 2018. Prior to BPC, DeAndre served for three years as the director of development and communications at St. Paul’s Episcopal School in Oakland. He also spent six years at Bentley School, first as the high school dean of students, and then, as head of the middle school. With over a decade of experience as a high school mathematics teacher, DeAndre taught at San Francisco University High School and The Westminster Schools in Atlanta, Georgia. He holds a B.A. in mathematics from Morehouse College, and an M.Ed. in mathematics education from The University of Georgia. DeAndre has two sons; an eleventh grader at Bishop O’Dowd High School and a college sophomore at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is a huge San Francisco Giants fan, and he has been to spring training with at least one of his sons for the past 16 years!
Why I Work with Children
Working with young people is such a joy, especially middle schoolers. They get to learn to navigate the world while exploring identity. I always get to learn because they all maneuver this stage of life so differently, and I continue to be inspired by them.
A Favorite Book
The Autobiography of Malcolm X is the most important book I have ever read. I read it in high school, college, and twice more as an adult. In the face of constant adversity, his commitment to helping others while constantly seeking personal growth is awe-inspiring.
