Fifth Grade Science & Technology Teacher, Sixth Grade Technology Teacher, Seventh Grade Wellness Teacher, & K-8 STEAM Coordinator
Christine Mytko has a B.S. in the teaching of biology from the University of Illinois, an M.S. in advanced education from Northwestern University, and has almost completed a master’s degree in public health at UC Berkeley. She is a frequent presenter at edtech conferences, science festivals, and maker faires, twice winning the Exploratorium’s Iron Science Teacher competition. In 2012, she was selected to participate in the Centers for Disease Control’s Science Ambassador program in Atlanta, GA, returned in 2016 as a peer facilitator, and continues to work with their regional outreach team. She spent two summers working with scientists at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory helping to develop their science outreach program. Ms. Mytko and her students were invited to share their ALS-related 3D data visualization work at the White House Maker Faire in June 2014 and are publishing a children’s book on the science of synchrotrons (Ev’s Synchrotron Adventure: An Electron’s Story). Concurrent with her time at BPC, Ms. Mytko also worked for two years as a curriculum developer at the Lawrence Hall of Science’s Learning Design Group, creating NGSS-aligned engineering curriculum. Ms. Mytko heads up BPC’s Maker Club, Improv Club, and Yearbook, and more often than not is 3D printing something in her classroom. Ms. Mytko has a special affinity for fish mummies, bicycles, virtual reality, and chickens as well as for teaching adult and family improv classes. She joined the Black Pine Circle School faculty in 2007.
Why I Work with Children
I enjoy teaching middle school, specifically, as we support students in developing from children into their more independent, young adult selves. Kids provide a constant stream of inspiration towards innovation, as their reaction to any idea is, “We could totally do that!”
