It’s a sincere pleasure for me to welcome you to Black Pine Circle School’s website. We’re doing our best to put forward the very human (analog) qualities of our school community in this digital space. As you wander through the site, keep the core values of Curiosity, Community, Inquiry, and Voice in your mind. These are the values that guide our time with the students and each other.
After more than forty years, we continue to hold to our founders’ vision of a school where arts and academics are taught with equal passion, vigor, and mastery. We don’t have electives because we believe everyone should know the joys of music, the thrill of visual art, and the power of performance. At Black Pine Circle School, knowledge and goodness stand as twin pillars of authentic intellectual and emotional health. One twin without the other is easily corrupted, but together they form the finest character.
All of us come into this world as enthusiastic skeptics. We need to know how things work. At Black Pine Circle School, we begin everything we do with an understanding that asking meaningful questions is a far more noble pursuit than merely collecting facts. Our students are enthusiastic learners who gain wisdom by examining the puzzles inherent in all disciplines. They learn to safely explore conflicting points of view, circling in on key ideas, facts, and inferences through Socratic Practice.
At Black Pine Circle School, we take great pride in our award-winning teaching faculty. Deep down, all of us know that walls, textbooks, and shiny doorknobs don’t create life-changing educational moments–great teachers do. And great schools attract and retain great teachers. Teachers at Black Pine Circle School dedicate themselves to nurturing each student, both intellectually and emotionally. Every day, our intimate community of 310 K-8 students and more than 70 faculty members looks forward to the exploration of authentic understanding. As a way of underlining our intimacy, I often joke with the students, “With so many caring and talented adults around, you can hardly get away with anything!”
We also have a lot of fun at Black Pine Circle School! Whether we’re staging a parent-faculty talent show, hosting the students challenging the teachers in a hula hooping contest at our annual Back to School Picnic, dancing to jazz music played by one of our bands at an assembly, writing plays in fourth grade, or creating a lower school mercado hosted by the 5th grade, we know that learning is a journey where one must often stop and enjoy the company of one’s fellow travelers.
People often ask me, “What kinds of families are happiest at Black Pine Circle School?” My answer is simple: families who believe that the mysteries of the world around us are endlessly interesting, wildly complex, and well worth exploring. Young people or adults who believe they’ve “seen it all” or “know it all” are mercilessly reminded to “look more closely,” to “not believe everything they think,” and to embrace the idea that curiosity leads to deeper appreciation–and ultimately understanding–of nearly any subject.
Please make an appointment to meet with us and tour our campus. We truly enjoy showing people around our unique learning environment! If you have any immediate questions, please send an email to Greta Wong, our director of admissions, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
